Dakkap voor ventilatie in- en uitlaat voor Nijburg

The Design Challenge

WeLLDesign was commissioned by Nijburg Industry Group to design a renewed rooftop hood for buildings with large air handling systems. The existing hoods were functional but outdated in both appearance and technology. Nijburg wanted a modern, integrated rooftop hood that combines air intake and exhaust in a single product—without causing any short-circuiting between the two airflows.

The Solution

WeLLDesign developed an asymmetric rooftop hood with an elevated exhaust tower. The air is expelled vertically and drawn in horizontally, ensuring that the airflow streams do not intersect. The tower features a patented rain collection system that efficiently drains water. The hood is made entirely of aluminum, ensuring a long lifespan.

Ideation on possible solutions

The Process

WeLLDesign guided the entire process from the first sketches to the production-ready design. Using digital simulations and prototypes, the airflow and rain drainage were tested and refined. Through close collaboration with Nijburg, a design was created that is technically efficient, easy to manufacture, and visually distinctive.

Simulated Airstream

During the design process, WeLLDesign conducted extensive airflow simulations, providing valuable insights into the internal behavior of airflows under different conditions. The results helped further refine the design, ensuring that the airflow moves upward as a narrow, stable column. These simulations provided a solid foundation for the continued development of the combined rooftop hood design.

Asymmetric design

The rooftop hood features a striking asymmetric design with an elevated exhaust tower. This structure creates a strong, vertical airflow that rises well above the intake opening, preventing the expelled air from being drawn in again. The asymmetry also gives the product a distinctive silhouette and a modern character. Form and function reinforce each other: the hood not only looks better but also performs demonstrably better.

Patented rain collection

The rooftop hood features a patented rain collection system that captures and drains water through the aluminum supports. This prevents any rainwater from entering, even during heavy rainfall. The system is fully integrated into the design, giving the hood a clean, streamlined appearance while remaining low-maintenance—without the need for additional parts or openings.

Aluminium Construction

The entire rooftop hood is made of aluminum—from the extruded corner profiles to the folded sheet panels. This material is lightweight, strong, and resistant to corrosion. By using only aluminum, galvanic corrosion is prevented, and the hood is fully recyclable. Moreover, this material choice aligns perfectly with Nijburg’s production expertise. As a result, the construction is not only sustainable but also efficient to manufacture and easy to install on large buildings.

A Strategic Design Language

The rounded corners and clean lines give the rooftop hood a modern and distinctive appearance. This design language emphasizes quality and gives the hood a high-end look that complements contemporary architecture. In this way, the Solid Air combined rooftop hood fits seamlessly within Nijburg’s brand identity.

Sustainable and future proof

Thanks to the choice of materials, smart airflow management, and integrated rain collection system, a robust product has been created with a long lifespan. The rooftop hood requires minimal maintenance and can be fully recycled at the end of its use. In this way, the design contributes to a better indoor climate and a more sustainable built environment — exactly what Nijburg envisioned with this new generation of rooftop hoods.

Three Products

In addition to the combined rooftop hood, WeLLDesign also designed two other rooftop hoods: the BDHN (suitable for both supply and exhaust) and the BDVN (specifically for exhaust). Together, these rooftop hoods form a harmonious addition to the Nijburg product portfolio.
