3D printed medical device for Cell Recovery Systems
What is it?
The CellRecoverySystem is a device that for diverse health benefits ensures. Techniques are used that are entirely new and are being employed in this combination for the first time. Cold plasma, electromagnetic frequencies, Far infrared and light a sound to ensure a complete experience that can be used in both medical and wellness fields. The application of the CellRecoverySystem is therefore broad: from office complexes so that employees remain concentrated to pain reduction in rehabilitation and from treatments in hospitals to anti-aging sessions during a stay in a resort.
Design brief
Cell Recovery Systems WeLLDesign were approached with the request to design the device's casing. They had already developed the technology to an advanced stage, but they needed our help with the rest of the design. Therefore, our main focus was on the styling and intelligently integrating the existing technology.
The main requirements were:
- It should have a luxurious, medical, futuristic and wellness feel.
- It must be possible to assemble the CellRecoverySystem on site.
- All technical components must be accessible, even after installation.
- The housing should have internal mounting points for attaching the equipment.
- The CellRecoverySystem should be as ergonomic as possible and intuitive to use for a complete relaxation experience.
- The first working prototype must be ready within 15 weeks.
The Process
With this information, our first step was to look for the right wording.
Through sketching, we explored various forms in search of the right look and feel. The challenge was to strike a balance between these elements. On the one hand, we wanted it to be an intimate device in which users feel protected; on the other hand, we were looking for an open form in which users do not feel confined. On the one hand, we were looking for a futuristic look, but on the other, we also wanted the device to convey as much trust as possible. We were also seeking a balance between a sense of luxury and wellbeing on the one hand, and a medical aesthetic on the other.
Ultimately, we arrived at several concepts. By strategically deploying advanced software, we were able to quickly convert our sketches into realistic-looking renders. These renders formed the basis for the concept selection that would subsequently be made.

Together with the client, we opted for concept 2. We then developed that concept further to arrive at a feasible geometric form. Using CAD software, it was converted into a balanced 3D model. Finally, it was a matter of considering ‘details’ such as lighting, materials and colours. The colour green is often associated with this type of technology and should therefore play a role. We opted for a fresh green that lends the product a medical feel. The rest of the device would be finished in matt white to create a hygienic and luxurious look.
The next steps
This design has been adapted to make it feasible to manufacture using 3D printers. The final design was as follows:
Production
The first unit has now been manufactured by Fibre coating in Zwolle. In total, 25 3D prints have been made, which have been assembled into 7 parts. At the moment, this is being further assembled and all the technology is being attached, as well as the sun lounger.
