Timeless bin Article for Bicycle

Market position

To strengthen its market position in street furniture, Bicycle decided to develop a vandal resistant and easy to clean rubbish bin, and commissioned WeLLDesign for the design.

Design and USP's

In steeds meer gemeenten hoort de Articlean inmiddels tot het straatbeeld. Uitgangspunten bij de productontwikkeling waren vandalismebestendigheid, brandveiligheid en variatie in plaatsingsmogelijkheden.

Articlean has become an increasingly familiar sight in many municipalities. The development priorities included vandal resistance, fire safety and flexible positioning, which have become Articlean’s unique selling points in addition to easy emptying, optional lid and a choice of colours. Articlean can be emptied either from the top or bottom.

This efficient and sustainable design has become a familiar sight on the streets of the Netherlands. During the development of the Articlean, WeLLDesign not only considered the ergonomics of emptying the waste bin but also anti-vandalism, fire safety, and a variety of mounting methods. Since 1985, the innovative concept of the Articlean has been imitated multiple times. – Velopa

BigBin

In 2005 WeLLDesign won a contest for coming up with a solution to limit the amounts of litter on the beaches of the posh Dutch city of Bloemendaal (translated as ‘Valley of flowers’). Nederland Schoon voor een oplossing om op het strand van Bloemendaal het zwerfafval drastisch te verminderen.

This gave us the idea for the BigBin, a shape inspired by a flower vase, entirely made from recyclable polyethylene.

The BigBin in use

This cheerful ‘Dutch Design’ waste bin is based on the idea that the more a waste point stands out, the more beach visitors will use it.

The BigBin is 2.5 metres high so you can see it from a great distance, even amongst all the parasols on the beach. The bright colours also make the BigBin really stand out.

A clever design aspect is that it's rotationally moulded in one piece, and then the ‘caps’ are swapped to create different colour combinations. This ensures low production costs without compromising on its cheerful appearance.

The BigBin was used for many years on Bloemendaal beach and received very positive feedback. The BigBin proved itself in reducing litter.
