Giftable paint pot Paint can for History
Design brief
Histor needed groundbreaking new packaging, aimed at consumers and paint experience. To find the best design they organised a pitch. WeLLDesign entered the pitch with an innovative concept and won the assignment.
Development
To create a value-added packaging, WeLLDesign initiated a painting session. All aspects of the painting process were addressed: shelf presentation, in-store purchase, transportation home, opening the can, pouring, and the actual painting. It soon became apparent that the customer journey was not ideal in all sorts of ways.
This gave an idea for a completely new packaging: a square, plastic container with rounded corners that is easy to hold and pours without leaking.
Development
WeLLDesign worked out the concept, in close collaboration with History, Omefa Injection moulder, BPO (analyses) at Will&Co (materials supplier).
.
The Result
In 1886, the patent for the original paint can was registered. 124 years later, in 2010, Histor introduced Paintcan, a revolutionary plastic paint pot with optimal ease of use and strong shelf presence.
Paintcan Pricing
Awards: The Golden Nut, GIO Award, Dutch Design Award (finalist). The Golden Nut comes from the Dutch Packaging Centre. The jury particularly praised the distinctive design and the improved ease of use for the painter. Furthermore, the square design is highly recognisable on the shelf.
The transition from tin to plastic for this application can rightly be called revolutionary. It must meet the strength requirements of a metal tin, yet be as light and thin-walled as possible, in order to save on cycle time and material costs.
Injection moulding
The Paintcan is manufactured using injection moulding. The packaging was developed in close collaboration with Omefa (injection moulder) and Will&Co (material supplier). BPO contributed to the development through strength and stiffness analyses and wall thickness optimisation.
Better shelf representation
The square design provides an entirely new, but also efficient, shelf presentation compared to conventional round jars.
